Catherine Noonan

Catherine Noonan, daughter of Edward Noonan and Betty Noonan from Bodyke, County Clare, left the Scarriff Workhouse in 1850 on board the Thomas Arbuthnot which arrived in Sydney as part of the Earl Grey scheme.

At 16 years of age, she could neither read nor write and had no relatives in the colony.  She was employed as a servant with the Shelley family and moved with them to South Australia.

She married Henry Higgins, a shoemaker from Kent in 1851 and moved to Victorian Goldfields at Newstead.

They had 11 children and at least 65 grandchildren

William Henry Higgins born 1852 had 13 children and lived in Castlemaine, Victoria.
