FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTY CLAREMEN'S ASSOCIATION

 

John Clune was born at Rylane, Carrahn, in the Parish of Quin, Co. Clare.  He was the first man in Clare to be sworn in to the Fenian Brotherhood in 1866.  His home in Rylane was subjected to many raids. After his arrest as part of the Fenian rishing he was sentenced and transported to Bermuda.  He later escaped to the United States where he took part in organising the Claremen's Association, having become involved through his association with Edmund O'Donavan the son of John O'Donovan the great Gaelic scholar,  and was elected its first President in 1887.

He was married and had two children.
