John J Carey

John J Carey from Cooraclare was President of the County Claremen's Association in New York in 1948 and 1949.

Before he left for New York, he was a well known athlete, in track events throughout the County and Munster.  His biggest honour was when he was selected from past experience to train the famous Clare Senior Football team of 1929 that lost the championship to Tipperary by a lone point at Celtic Park, Long Island, before a crowd of 10,000 fans.  The late mayor of New York, James J. Walker tossed the ball to start the game and was escorted to the field proudly by John J. Carey.
