Lucille Mahoney

Parish:

Little did Lucille know when she left Kilrush at 2 years of age that she would eventually design and arrange ensembles for Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt.  She was favourite attendant to the President's wife for over 25 years.  She started her career in stores and then in sales before becoming a very senior executive in the prestigous 5th Avenue store, Arnold Constable & Co.

There were regular reports in the New York press of visits to the store by Mrs. Roosevelt, where Lucille organised fashionable dresses and coats for various special events including the wedding of her son.

One dress was described for Easter as having a flair skirt and bracelet length sleeves with fan tucks above and below the belt in bluebird blue which was set off by a semi-fitted coat enhanced by open-cut embroidery.  There was a special dressing room done in her favourite blue for the President's wife and this was changed into the bridal room when not required by Mrs. Roosevelt.
