Matthew P Breen

Matthew P Breen was born circa 1845 in Fernpark, Cooraclare.  He was son of Patrick Breen CE who died in 1875 and was buried in Kilmacduane, Cooraclare. 

Matthew went to New York and became quite active in Tammany Hall politics.  He was appointed Police Magistrate in 1902 and served for 19 years.

He subsequently wrote a book "30 years of New York politics"

His daughter Grace sang in the musical "Eileen" on Broadway.

Her career there was shortlived as she married in 1917 and her husband William J Clarke was immediately sent to the war in Europe.

Her son Laurence Breen Clarke was born in New York in 1924 and served honourably in the US Navy during World War II.  He was a retired civil trial attorney and also enjoyed an operatic career.  He died of leukemia in 2001.  He is survived by his son William J Clarke, his daughter Lauren Clarke-Bennett and grandson Taylor Clarke Bennett.

Matthew P Breen had 5 other children - son Matthew was murdered in 1928, and also sons Henry J Breen and William Henry who died in 1912.  He was Assistant District Attorney.  Daughters were Mary Breen (Mary de Graux) and Catherine Breen.

Matthew's brother Michael Breen also travelled to New York.  He served as Surgeon with the 69th Regiment.  Another brother Thomas H Breen served with the US forces in Washington and older brother John Breen went to New Zealand. John was born around 1835 and was the son of Patrick's first wife Catherine.
