Paddy Gallagher

Was Paddy Gallagher the bravest President of the County Clare P.B. & S Association in New York?  It was during his reign in 1952 -1953 that the thought of allowing female members was considered.  Apparently, a lady called Mary Kennedy challenged him as to why there were no women members.  Mary and Anna Pilkington Burns were invited to the June meeting in 1952 with a few more girls and this issue was discussed and from then on the organisation thrived with active female members.  Rumour has it that some of the younger men were not at all impressed that they were fully integrated as members of the association as they thought they should be in a different organisation.  It took 30 years until 1983 before the first woman President Mary Ann O'Sullivan was chosen.
