Peter Lillis

Date of Birth:
1889
Date of Death:
1968

Peter Lillis from Ross, Kilballyowen, County Clare was the youngest of the family of 10 born to John Lillis and Margaret (nee Keating)

on the last house on the Loop Head Road.  His siblings were Pat Lillis, Lawrence Lillis, John Lillis, Mary A Lillis, Martin Lillis, Tom Lillis, Michael Lillis.  He emigrated to the USA and met his future wife, Mary Rose Kelly from Sligo in New York.  They settled in Jersey City and he worked on the railroad.  Their three daughters were Ann Marie Lillis, Margaret Lillis and Eleanore Lillis.

Ann married Bill Flanagan who later became interested in politics and was Deputy Mayor of Jersey City, Sheriff of Hudson County and then became Executive Director of the NJ Turnpike Authority - one of the longest and busiest highways in the USA.  He was President of the International Bridge Tunnel and Turnpike Association.  He was invited to be part of JFK's cabinet but turned him down as he had young children and his mother lived alone.  He told JFK that he would do anything for him in NJ but that he could not leave his family while he commuted to Washington.  Their children are Kathleen, Patricia, Eileen, William and John.  Peter Lillis spent his last years with this family before he died in 1968.

Margaret married Eddie Ulrich and they had two daughters.

Thank you to Kathleen Flanagan who now lives in Canada for sharing this story.
